Qafeer Makerspace
Jan 2015 - Dec 2016
Team of 2
Overview

This collection of client prototyping projects was completed at Qafeer Makerspace, serving enterprise clients and individual inventors with end-to-end prototype manufacturing. Projects ranged from electronics housing for automotive control systems to sensor enclosures to the standout self-following travel bag designed for airports. The work demonstrated complete product development capabilities from client requirements through SolidWorks design to physical manufacturing using 3D printing, CNC machining, and laser cutting.

Problem Solved

Enterprise clients needed affordable prototype manufacturing without stopping production lines, and inventors needed access to professional prototyping capabilities

My Role: 3D Designer / Machine Operator / Production Lead
  • Designed client prototypes in SolidWorks based on requirements
  • Generated toolpaths using Fusion 360 CAM and SolidCAM
  • Operated 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters for manufacturing
  • Managed client relationships and project delivery
  • Ensured quality control throughout prototyping process
Key Outcomes
  • Manufactured self-following travel bag prototype for airport use - IoT-enabled autonomous luggage
  • Produced electronics housing for automotive control systems for enterprise client
  • Created sensor housings and enclosures for various industrial applications
  • Delivered electronic device prototypes and consumer product utensils
  • Demonstrated end-to-end design-to-manufacture capability across multiple material types

The Story

Situation

Qafeer Makerspace had established manufacturing capabilities with 3D printers, CNC machines, and laser cutters. Enterprise clients needed affordable prototype manufacturing without disrupting their production lines, while individual inventors sought access to professional prototyping.

Task

Khaled took on roles spanning 3D design, machine operation, and production management to deliver client prototypes from initial requirements through to finished physical products.

Action

Each project began with client requirements gathering, followed by SolidWorks design work to create production-ready 3D models. Toolpaths were generated using Fusion 360 CAM or SolidCAM depending on the manufacturing method. Physical production utilized the appropriate technology - 3D printing for complex geometries, CNC machining for precision metal parts, laser cutting for flat materials. The standout project was a self-following travel bag incorporating IoT technology to autonomously follow its owner through airports.

Result

Multiple successful prototypes were delivered to enterprise clients and individual inventors across diverse applications including automotive electronics housing, sensor enclosures, and consumer products. The self-following travel bag prototype remains a memorable highlight, demonstrating the ability to integrate IoT technology with mechanical design. The experience fulfilled the dream of designing and manufacturing tangible products from scratch to completion.
